Wondering what to make tonight? Quickly throw together this hearty one pot meal of turkey and potatoes! Serve over roasted veggies, traditional rice, or cauliflower rice for a healthy and satisfying dinner.

Update: This recipe was originally published in 2020 and has been republished with all new photos.

This Ground Turkey and Potato Skillet was loosely inspired by a classic picadillo. It has very different flavors – a picadillo includes olives and raisins. That’s not going to fly with my children. Or my husband, if I’m being honest. But I wanted to take that general idea and make it family friendly with very simple ingredients. We all need hobbies and that’s mine.

This meal is an accurate reflection of my favorite kind of meal to make at home. It may not be the prettiest, but it’s tasty. The addition of potatoes keeps it hearty. And it’s just so easy! This is exactly the sort of comfort food I need in my life right now. How about you?

Ingredients for Ground Turkey and Potato Skillet

  • Ground turkey: Lean ground turkey or lean ground beef are both great options. Another lean ground meat like ground chicken can also be used.
  • Potatoes: I prefer yellow or gold potatoes. Russet, sweet, or red would all work beautifully too!
  • Olive or avocado oil: The oil helps sautรฉ the diced potatoes until tender. I recommend olive or avocado oil but you can use any oil youโ€™re comfortable cooking with.
  • Canned tomato sauce: You can find canned tomato sauce in the grocery store on the aisle with canned tomatoes. This will add a rich tomato flavor to our dish.
  • Garlic: You can mince your own garlic or use a jarred variety.
  • Seasonings: Dried oregano, dried basil, dried parsley, chili powder, garlic powder, onion powder, salt, and black pepper are the simple herbs and spices we’ll use to flavor this one pot meal. You can also experiment with whatever you have in your own pantry!

How to Make Ground Turkey and Potato Skillet

To create this meal, you’ll start by seasoning and browning the ground turkey. Set aside. (Of course you can easily use a lean ground beef if that’s what you have on hand or prefer.)

Then the potatoes go in the pan to get a little color. Now incorporate the turkey, garlic, tomato sauce, water, and more seasonings. Reduce the heat, cover, and let it all simmer until your potatoes are tender.

It’s next to impossible to screw this up. It’s just that easy!

How to Serve This

Oh there are so many ways to serve up this easy meal. You can clearly enjoy it as is and itโ€™s just perfect. Flavorful. Healthy. Satiating thanks to those potatoes.

But perhaps you want to add something to stretch this dish a bit further? I know I always like something green on our plates! Pile this delicious combo of turkey and potatoes over roasted veggies like my Spicy Roasted Broccoli or Easy Roasted Broccoli (if you don’t like heat). That will give you an added boost of vegetables! This is also crazy delicious over traditional or cauliflower rice!

Other veggies that work beautifully either layered under or just served beside this skillet meal are Garlic Green Beans, Simple Sautรฉed Cabbage, or Roasted Green Beans with Almonds.

Want to add a salad to your meal? My Easy Homemade Italian Dressing will beautifully flavor a side salad.

No matter how you choose to serve this, youโ€™re going to love it. This recipe earns rave reviews on Instagram for good reason!

My husband and I love this recipe. We either use ground beef or sugar free ground Italian sausage in place of the ground turkey and serve over zucchini noodles. It’s become a favorite for us.

Winner, winner turkey dinner! ย I wasnโ€™t expecting much from this super-simple recipe but the other reviews convinced me. So, I decided to leave a comment also. ย This is SO easy, SO tasty and SO quick. ย I served it with some avocado slices and itโ€™s a total hit. ย Itโ€™s also a great base recipe to tweak and play around with. ย Thanks! ย Iโ€™ll definitely use this recipe again.ย

Love this whole comment! Thank you so much!!

  3. Shelley says:

Delicious, for lack of ingredients substituted cumin for chili powder, and cilantro for parsley, 1/2 the tomato sauce due to acid sensitivity. Loved this simple and tasty recipe, and tomatoes cooked perfectly. Making again soon!

    Thank you ๐Ÿ˜Š

      ***potatoes (not tomatoes)ย

So…I am giving it five stars because I think the recipe itself is great and it will be a good meal in the future, but I would dock one or two stars for the meal I consumed, using the “traditional rice” option that was one of the recommendations of what to serve it over. I had a migraine when I made this so all I was looking for was “is this easy?” and “do I have all the necessary ingredients?” – the answer to this was yes, because I did have some leftover rice ready to go. I put zero thought, until I started eating it, into that reality that potatoes and rice is kind of a weird combination.

I do see how this would be amazing over broccoli, or a veggie medley, and look forward to making this again in the future – but I do not recommend this with rice.

This ground turkey and potato skillet recipe is too good! Tried it last night and it’s become an instant family favorite. Thanks for sharing!

  6. Aimee Lynn says:

So so good! I didnโ€™t have some of the spices on hand so I replaced them with Italian seasoning and it worked well. Love the chili powder in here, it gave it a nice kick.

  7. Barbara Shubert says:

Looks good. smells good. I used ground turkey, and put in zucchini and cooked the cabbage in with the meal. Used home made sauce and sweet potatoes for a healthier no sugar dish. Thank you. We get tired of the same old dishes. This one I will use again.

  8. Pierre says:

I made this recipe today and it came out so good. I poured it over rice.

  9. Jordan says:

I went a little more heavy on the spices. About 3/4 tsp on the turkey and then I used Italian seasoning to account for the herbs on the potatoes, threw some parsley on there. And cooked. I then cooked some eggs and made them cheesy (because Iโ€™m a cheesy guy), and made a burrito (I went rogue) and omg this was the best thing. I am meal prepping this 10000%. This recipe will live on. Thanks!!
